In our recent video, “A Day in the Life of an Energy Developer,” Johnny Shelton, one of our energy developers focused on natural gas projects, shares what makes his role so rewarding.
Connecting with Communities
For Johnny, the most meaningful part of his job is working with people. From landowners to local stakeholders, community engagement is at the heart of every project. “The most interesting part of my job is working with people,” Johnny explains. His goal is clear: to ensure our energy projects are developed in ways that benefit the community. That means spending time in the field—about half his workweek—listening, learning, and building trust.
Balancing Office and Field Work
Energy development is a dynamic role that blends technical expertise with collaboration. When Johnny isn’t in the field, he’s at our Chicago home office working closely with teams across engineering, legal, project management, and procurement. This cross-functional approach ensures that every project moves forward efficiently and responsibly.
A Career Built on Innovation
Johnny’s journey began with a degree in mechanical engineering and early experience at a southern power utility. Over the years, he explored industrial and utility-scale power generation before joining Invenergy. What drew him to project development? The opportunity to take an idea from concept through construction and operation—while leveraging low- or no-carbon technologies to minimize environmental impact.

For Johnny, energy development isn’t just about today; it’s about ensuring dependable power for generations to come. Invenergy’s projects strengthen the reliability of the electric grid, helping communities access consistent, affordable energy when they need it most. Johnny takes pride in knowing his work supports a resilient energy future, where homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure can count on power every day.
